Why is an assessment needed?

An assessment is needed as it is an essential element used to inform instruction; to identify skills that need review. Determining a student’s baseline performance is the first step in implementing good reading instructions. In the classroom, we find students who come from varying experiences and knowledge. Each student has a different skillset that needs and requires it to be retaught while others have already mastered that skill. The various levels students are, makes it necessary to create literacy instruction to meet the individual needs of each student. The data information provided from assessments helps us to gather the information required to develop appropriate lessons and improve instruction for all students.
